The Conjuring(2013)
The trailer 'The Conjuring' is based in a house with a family of girls, this suggets that they would be in a safe enviroment but they are actually in danger. A variety of scary shots happen in this trailer but they are not fully shown, this is effective towards the audeince because it makes them want to watch the film and know what is going to happen. The length of this trailer is 2mins and 41 seconds with over 100 different shots, this allows the audience to see different settings and to watch the build up but not fully, keeping the mystery of the film. At the beginning of the trailer the shots are shown on the screen for as long as 10-15 seconds, when the atmosphere starts to build up shots are flashed onto the screen instead. Although the length of the trailer is short compared to the film we are still able to see enought shots to know what it happening. Mainly dark colours are used in this trailer suggesting the idea of mystery and evil. Most scary shots are filmed at night time the darkness creates assumptions enhancing the characters/audiences fear. |
The Grudge(2004)
The trailer 'The Grudge' has around 39 shots all together, which are usual close up shots, this makes it effective as it emphasises on the their facial expressions when they are scared creating tension with the audience. This length of the trailer is 1minute and 26seconds this is average for a horror film. The reason for a short trailer would be that it is long enough to show snippets of the film, but not too much so the audience is hooked but would like to know more, so will watch the film. To the begining of the trailer most shots are longer and slow which creates mystery. From 27seconds it builds up and the shots get faster this lasts for 4 seconds, but these kind of fast moments happen throughout the trailer. A lot of white colours are used in this trailer, for example the women victim always wears light coloured outfits, this shows innocence and vulnerability as she is being targeted at from the Yuri. Most deaths in the film happen in the day time this is a contrast to a typical horror film where everything happens at night which is when people are more vulnerable. |

The Purge(2014)
This trailer has around 57 different shots, this is a lot for a short trailer and in comparriosn to the trailer 'The Grudge'. Although there are many different shots in this trailer the shots last around 3 seconds at the most, this allows the audience to see a variety of settings that are imporant in the whole film. Although it is a horror film, the audiences that enjoy action films could also be interested in this film. There are many main characters so the use of fast shots means they are able to include everyone and their different stories. At the start of the trailer the shots filmed are in the daylight and nearer to the end the shots are done at night time, this suggests that to the beginning of the trailer they are safe and the audience know there is nothing bad to come yet. Similar to 'The Conjuring' film every death happens at night time because people are vulnerable. It also creates assumptions from the audiences that the characters are never safe, so the audience thinks something bad may happen at any time. Most people in this trailer are wearing dark colours such as black and brown, this suggests death and mystery which links to the film as its all about killing. |
The Women In Black(2012)
This trailer 'Women In Black' has around 60 different shots. These shorts are mainly mid shots or long shots the reason for this is that they want to capture the Yuri and the victim in the same shot, it creates tension because the audience knows but the victim does not. Like most horror trailers the shots start of longer, this helps us as the audience get the idea of the story line it ,at 30seconds the voice of a little boy appears he starts to describe the story of 'The Women In Black' this lasts until 50 seconds when the victim enters the house. it then continues at 58 and follows through to the end of the trailer. When the little boy is talking at the end of every sentence his words rhyme which is kid like, but as a contrast he sounds monotone which is unusual for children as they are always happy and lively. It then builds up from 50 seconds and the shots get faster, as well as the music. The Yuri in this film wears black and nothing else this shows mystery from her character because we know nothing about her. It also suggests evil and death which seems to happy a lot in the film. |

Sinister(2012)
Also like the film The Conjuring and The Grudge sinister is based in a house, so you may think its a safe place but its actually where all the paranormal shots are based. The main Victims of the Yuri are young children, this suggets they are vulnerable and innocent. In this trailer there is around 150 shots, which has been the most out of all these trailers. The shots are really short and look like they are flashing on and off the screen creating a panic atmosphere for the audience, this starts at 10 seconds of flashes images of the Yuri's symbol with dialogue over the top explain an event, that has happened (the killing) which lasts for 17 seconds before going back to the same house but 9 months before, this already makes the audience suspicious of what may happen. The quick shots are same through out but leaving enough time to understand what is going on. For example at the start they are exploring the house and talking about their lives. Like The Women In Black the Yuri is dressed in all black and their face is not so clear, but instead its a man not a women. |
Yellowbrickroad(2011)
Overall this trailer has around 64 shots, which build up in speed throughout the trailer. Unlike most trailers the start of Yellowbrickroad starts off with the titles explaining the story, this lasts for 20 seconds, there are a few flashing images creating a panicked atmosphere afterwards and then titles following for another 5 seconds. Officially moving images aren't shown in the trailer until 39 seconds. Unlike the trailers above this trailer doesn't include a Yuri or a killer, this makes it more mysterious as we want to watch the trailer to see who's killing these innocent people. The name Yellowbrickroad is taken from the children's film The Wizard Of Oz, this trailer is different to how u would expect it to be because of the name and film it has come from, so it contrasts including gore and paranormal behaviour. |
