Props
For our trailer we will be using a variety of different props. These props will add to the diversity and help to keep the selection of shots interesting and full of detail. In trailers that we have studied, the director has included many types and formats of props to add detail and interest in the total amount of shots. Even if the shot is a couple of seconds long, it still suggests effort and a creative image, outside of the box. The excess of props in a room, mainly in a Slasher, allows the audience to appreciate the creepy attributes or the unkempt nature of a killer.
In horror films props are used normally to indicate evil, death and pain. Such things like knifes, guns, ropes, masks etc. These things help in setting the world of the film and in setting the themes and genres of a particular film. Props play a significant part in a film in helping to tell a certain story. Props function as a part of a set or as equipment used by actors. They tell a story without words and express the thoughts and feelings of the characters.
Props make it easier to replicate realistic situations without having to implicate the actors’ physical wellbeing. Without the use of props, creating realistic killings, stabbings, fatal injuries etc would be made very difficult.

Typical Props Used in Horror and our Props
In many horror films the use of ropes and chains are common. Things of such kind tend to symbolise constraint and ambush. They show captivity and imprisonment and add tension to the scene. It also adds to the dramatic effect and causes the audience to think will the victim survive or die a painful death. In our trailer we were going to use a rope to show the death of our Yuri and then the final death of our character.

Mirrors
Mirrors have proven to be a powerful prop within a horror, in an art form to which the visual is crucial, a glance in the mirror can be a window into the soul, an expression of self-doubt, a moment of realisation or perhaps the communication of internalised pain. It all depends on who's looking in the glass. In horror films such as Cabin in the Woods a man discovers a two way mirror which allows him to see his friend Dana getting undressed. however the mirror gives him the first inkling that something isn't quite right about the cabin. |
In our trailer we are going to use a mirror for the release of the Yuri and for the fist death, we have used the a plain rectangle mirror placed in the bathroom. The first use of the mirror is when one of the girls repeats the Yuri name three times, by her doing this she sees a quick flash of the Yuri's face releasing his spirit and causing him to process her.
The second use of the mirror is when one of the possessed girls friend goes to the bathroom to wash her face and looks up causing the mirror to smash, from this the Yuri uses a piece of the smashed glass to stab into the girls neck causing her to bleed to death. As you above the first mirror is before and the second is after we have smashed Ffion's face into it.

Rope
Rope is a key prop that is used within a horror, the reason rope is a key prop is due to the history that is behind them, for example the gallows was used to punish and kill criminals since the early 1571and stopped in 1955. Not only is hanging used a weapon it restricts the freedom of movement causing more pain as if not correctly done a person could be paralyzed for life. In our trailer we are using a rope in one of our scenes, we have used rope for the death scene of Ryan linking this to the death of our Yuri Mr Cullen as he hangs himself in the same room and same place, the reason we chose hanging was due to the background of our Yuri we thought due to the extreme and violent deaths he committed to his own family and then again through Holly's family that hanging would all most stop the deaths as he looses the freedom of movement. |
Newspaper Clippings
One prop that we are using for our trailer is newspaper clippings, we are using these to show the back story of our Yuri, telling people what he did and how he killed his family. We have created our own newspaper clippings with photographs of Cullen and his family, these clipping are placed in Holly's stairway so when we walk into the abandoned cabin they are the first thing we see.

Make Up
Within our trailer we will be using make up to help us portray our Yuri. Our main character will be getting processed in order for us to make her look different we will be making her skin look paler and her eyes darker. However with our plot for our trailer we don't want to make her makeup look to extravagant so instead we will be using a pale foundation and black eye shadow on her upper eyelids and underneath her eye in a wide circle, this will make her look tired and warn away. |
We are also using make up on Ffion for her last scene in our trailer, the reason we are using make up on Ffion is to make her look like she has been pushed into a mirror causing cuts, bruises and bleeding along her forehead. The final use of make up is on Ryan's neck, we have done this to give the feel of rope burn caused from his hanging.
Clothing
In our trailer we also had to decide what each one of the teenagers had to wear and how they looked. We decided on to make each teenager look just like a typical casual teenager. In the first scene where the 4 teenagers are arriving at the cabin all 3 girls had there hair down and straight, they also were all wearing skinny, Ffion and Holly wearing blue and Hannah wearing black. Then they just had a causal top or jumper. Ryan the only boy in the group was wearing black jeans and just a casual baseball top.
Throughout our trailer the clothing started to change, for example holly's clothing became very plain and dark which shows that her character was changing representing death, depression, strength and night which is when her character starts to get possessed and the killings start to happen.
Ffion's clothing also changes as in her last scene she is seen wearing a grey t-shirt for bed, this shows vulnerability, purity and innocence. In Hannah's last seen we decided for her to just wear a pair of jeans and a brown/yellow jumper.
The very last seen where Ryan is hung by the possessed Holly, he is wearing a smart shirt, this is symbolic as we wanted his clothing to help represent the the death of Mr Cullen himself as he hung himself in the same place in the garage wearing a smart shirt and tie.
