Intital Practice Shots
To create our trailer we need many practice shots to work from, including working with make-up, costume, location, sound and lighting. Even if a shot isn't perfect and it doesn't go to plan we can still work from them and edit them to make improvements.
Location:
We decided to film under the stage at school and began to film there, however we decided to change our location for Ryan's death scene to the boiler room as the lighting was too dark and the ceiling was too low for Ryan to hang from when filming this scene. We looked around the boiler room to see if it was suitable for us to film in; the beams on the ceiling were high enough for Ryan to hang from so we could get a better shot of of his legs stretched out hanging. The lighting was better and we used a large torch light at times when the lighting needed to be brighter. There was also more room on the floor for Ffion and Hannah to lie on so we could film a long shot of them for this scene. There was a water leak on the floor and this was perfect for our location as we could use it as an effect; Ryan dropped his handheld torch into the water when he found his dead friends on the floor.
Before we tried filming under the stage at school for Ryan's death we were planning on filming in Hannah's garage as it is old looking and the lighting would have been great to use for filming, however the beams on the ceiling were too high and unstable for Ryan to hang from, this location would have been too dangerous to film in for what we wanted to do as Ryan could have been injured or cause damage to the building.
For our holiday accommodation we decided to film around an abandoned cabin located in Plock Court, Longlevens. We had a look around before we began to film to make sure it was safe and secure to use and it was so we started filming there. The building is painted white but is now cracked and decayed looking and this is perfect for the 'abandoned' house we need.
For the scene where the doors in the garage fly open and the characters, Holly and Mr Cullen are stood there we were either going to choose Hannah's garage or Holly's garage; Hannah's was better for the location setting and lighting however her garage is connected to the garden whereas Holly's is connected to the kitchen. We needed to use Holly's garage for this location because the doors flying open are the main focus of this shot.
We initially decided to use Holly's house for our main location (the kitchen, bathroom and the landing). The kitchen sink was the right height for the scene of Hannah's death where Holly drown's her in the sink. For the scene of Ffion's death you can see the mirror from the landing outside of the bathroom, this was great for us as we could practice different shots and include Holly's point of view of her staring at Ffion when she was washing her face.
Makeup:
For Ryan's death we put makeup on his neck to show the rope burns from his hanging.
By painting cuts onto Ffion's forehead we were able to emphasise the force Holly used to slam her head into the mirror.
We were going to add pale makeup onto Hannah's face to make her look pale/blue as she was drowned by Holly, however in the scene where Ryan walks in on Ffion and Hannah dead on the floor, her hair was covering her face and Ffion had been thrown on top of her so makeup wasn't needed.
